Room Area Calculator

Room Square Footage Calculator

Enter your room's length and width to get instant square footage. Works in feet or meters and converts automatically, so you can plan flooring, paint, furniture, and HVAC sizing in one place.

How to Measure a Room for Square Footage

  1. Measure the length: use a 25-foot locking tape measure along the longest wall. Take the reading at floor level where the wall meets the floor for the most accurate number.

  2. Measure the width: measure the perpendicular wall. Keep the tape taut to avoid an inflated reading.

  3. Enter both numbers into the calculator. The result updates instantly as you type.

  4. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, divide the floor plan into rectangles. Measure each rectangle, calculate length × width for each, then sum the areas.

  5. Add a 5–10% waste allowanceif you're ordering flooring, tile, or carpet. Diagonal patterns and herringbone need closer to 15%.

Standard Room Sizes in US Homes

Why Room Square Footage Matters

Room square footage is the foundation for almost every home decision: how muchflooringandpaintyou need, what size rug fits, whether a sectional sofa will work, and how powerful an air-conditioner the room requires.

  • Material orders: contractors price flooring, tile, and paint by the square foot. A wrong measurement turns into either a costly second order or thousands of leftover dollars.
  • Furniture sizing:designers typically allocate 30–40% of a room's area to clear circulation space, with the rest going to furniture footprint.
  • HVAC sizing: a common rule of thumb is 20 BTU of cooling capacity per square foot in mild climates, increasing for hot regions and high ceilings.
  • Real-estate value: US home listings report Gross Living Area calculated to ANSI Z765, which is closely correlated with sale price per neighborhood.
  • Building code: US codes typically require a legal bedroom to be at least 70 sq ft with no dimension less than 7 ft, plus an emergency egress window.

Pro Tips for Accurate Measurements

Measure twice

Even pros measure a room twice. A half-inch error on each side of a 14 × 16 room is already a 2.5% deviation — enough to under-order one box of flooring.

Use a laser distance meter for large rooms

Laser tools are more accurate than tape for spans over 20 feet and don't sag. Models with Bluetooth can sync directly to floor-planning apps.

Sketch the floor plan first

Drawing the room before measuring helps you identify nooks, bays, and closets you might otherwise forget. Number every wall segment and record each measurement on the sketch.

Round up, not down

When ordering materials, round up to the next half-foot. A 12.5 ft length should be ordered as 13 ft. Returns are easier than emergency trips back to the store.
