About Square Feet Calculator
Free, accurate area calculators for homeowners, contractors, and DIY enthusiasts — built around the figures professionals actually use in the field.
Our Mission
Most online "area calculators" do basic math and stop there. We built Square Feet Calculator because measuring a space is only the first step — the question that follows is always: what does this mean for my project? How much flooring, paint, or tile do I actually need to buy? How does this size compare to standard rooms? Will my king bed fit? Is this a legal bedroom?
Every page on this site is built to answer the next question. We pair the basic area calculation with industry-standard waste percentages, manufacturer coverage rates, real cost ranges, and code-compliant minimums — all cited to the authoritative source.
Our Methodology
Every number on this site has a source. We do not invent figures and we do not paraphrase them without checking. Specifically:
- 1.Flooring waste percentagescome from the National Wood Flooring Association installation guidelines, cross-checked against retailer buyer's guides.
- 2.Paint coverage rates come from the technical data sheets published by Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore for their flagship product lines.
- 3.Room size references come from National Association of Home Builders surveys of new single-family construction in the United States.
- 4.Real estate measurements follow the ANSI Z765 standard for residential gross living area calculation.
- 5.Unit conversion factors are exact, derived from the international foot (0.3048 m) and the ANSI definition of an acre (43,560 sq ft).
- 6.Cost figures are based on current retail pricing from major US retailers and are updated each year. They are educated ranges, not quotes — local pricing always varies.

Square Feet Calculator Editorial
Home Measurement Team
Our editorial team researches every figure against authoritative industry sources — including the National Association of Home Builders, the National Wood Flooring Association, and major paint manufacturer technical data sheets — so the numbers you use to plan a project match what professionals use in the field.
What We Won't Do
- ·No paid placements. We don't accept payment to rank any brand or product higher in a comparison. When we mention manufacturers, it's because their technical data sheets are publicly available and represent the industry standard.
- ·No invented endorsements. We will not claim "trusted by 50,000 contractors" without the data to back it up. The site is new and growing.
- ·No paywalls. Every calculator and reference table on this site is free, with no sign-up required.
