How Installation Pattern Affects Waste

Straight-Lay (5–10% waste)

Planks or tiles run parallel to the longest wall. The most material-efficient layout with minimal cutting at room perimeter. Recommended for first-time DIY installs.

Diagonal (10–15% waste)

Materials run at a 45-degree angle to walls. Visually opens up small rooms but every perimeter cut is a partial plank, increasing waste.

Herringbone (15–20% waste)

A classic V-pattern with planks at 90-degree angles. Premium look but doubles the cutting work. Use short-length planks designed for the pattern to control waste.

Chevron (15–20% waste)

Like herringbone, but planks are pre-cut at a 45-degree angle so they meet point-to-point. Higher material cost but slightly less on-site waste than herringbone.
